Middleton St Mary's CE (VC) Primary School

Music

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. As our children move through school, they will learn to compose and develop knowledge about music that both inspires and excites them. Music sessions will give children the opportunity to play musical instruments on a weekly basis allowing them to build both their self-confidence and skills set to become high quality musicians. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, children began the year exploring body percussion before continuing to learn how to play various musical instruments. Children will experience and discuss music from other cultures and compare it to their own broadening their knowledge of both music and the world around them.

Music intent, implementation and impact

Our Music curriculum aims to promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning. Music reflects the culture and society we live in and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in. Our music curriculum is creative and enjoyable, music can also be a highly academic and demanding subject. It plays an important part in helping children feel part of a community. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms and to begin to make judgments about the quality of music.

At Middleton St Mary’s, we have employed a music teacher from the Leeds Music Hub to teach music across the school as we want to give all children the opportunity to experience high quality music education to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and become musicians, increasing their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

Children from Nursery to Year 2 have access to high quality music teaching weekly. In Years 3 to 6, children also have specialist music lessons in which they learn how to play a musical instrument throughout the year.

Class teachers alongside our employed Leeds Music Hub music teacher will assess children’s progress and understanding of music by making assessments as they observe them working during lessons. These assessments will then be recorded using Insight.
